How do you remove hard water spots from your car?

Start gently. Fresh hard water spots often come off with a proper wash and a mild spot remover, and you should never start with anything abrasive. If the spots have etched into the paint or glass, they may need professional paint correction.

What hard water spots are

Water in the Phoenix area is hard, which means it carries dissolved minerals. When a drop dries on the car, the water leaves and the minerals stay behind as a white ring or dot. Sprinklers, rinse water from washing at home and a quick drying in the sun are the usual causes.

Why they get worse

Fresh spots sit on top of the surface. Left for weeks in the sun, minerals can bond to the paint and in time can etch into it. Etched spots leave a mark even after the minerals are gone. That is why it pays to deal with them early.

Test in a hidden spot

Before you use any product on the whole panel, try it on a small hidden area, such as a lower edge or a door jamb. Wait and look at the result. If it dulls the paint or leaves a mark, stop. Glass, trim, wheels and paint can each react differently.

What to avoid

When spots will not come off

If the spots remain after a gentle wash and a proper remover, they may be etched. Etching is damage in the surface, so cleaning alone will not fix it. Paint correction works on the surface of the paint and may reduce or remove it, depending on how deep it is. A photo in good light helps a detailer tell you what is realistic.

Prevention that helps

The easiest spots to fix are the ones that never form. Check where the sprinklers point before you park. Dry the car with a clean microfiber towel after a rinse instead of letting it air dry. Wash early in the morning or in the evening when the panels are cool.

Glass spots are often easier than paint spots, but the same rules apply. Go gently, rinse well and do not use anything gritty. If a product label says to keep it off a certain surface, believe it.

Questions

Can hard water spots damage my paint?

Yes, if they stay on long enough. Fresh spots sit on the surface, but over time minerals can etch into the paint, especially in the sun.

Can I use vinegar on my car?

Be careful. Some people use diluted vinegar on glass, but it is not made for paint. Always test a hidden spot first and rinse well. A spot remover made for cars is the safer choice.

How do I stop spots from coming back?

Wash in the shade, dry the car with a clean towel instead of letting it air dry, and park out of the sprinkler spray.

Will paint correction remove etched spots?

Often, depending on depth. Deep etching may not come out fully. Send a photo to (480) 453-4274 to find out.
